Calculation models

We perform 3 steps in our calculations for CO2 emissions on behalf of our participants.

  • 1. Traffic transfer size

    We scrape a few pages for each participant to make an average of their average website page size.

  • 2. Traffic bandwidth usage

    Using either verified or estimated traffic and the adjusted traffic transfer size we calculate the bandwidth usage for a single visitor page view.

  • 3. Total energy consumption

    Using all the above data we calculate a total estimated energy consumption and calculate an estimated carbon footprint.

Following calculations are used in the above steps: %15 buffer on website speed score, 75% returning visitors, 25% first time viewers, 2% data loaded from cache, 85% direct and social visitors in relation to organic traffic (estimated or verified), 10.08% energy from channel datacenter and 89.92 % energy from transmission and end-user.

Traffic sources

We use both verified and estimated traffic to calculate CO2 emissions.

Verified traffic

When registering a channel participants may connect to any of our analytics partners like Google Analytics. Using the data from verified sources we'll be able to pull actual traffic data and make accurate calculations to reduce CO2 on your behalf.

Estimation of traffic

When estimating traffic for any channel there are tree key sources needed: Social, organic and direct traffic. We use a third-party software which has billions of scraped search results to estimate the organic traffic based on organic positions. To estimate direct and social traffic we use advanced mathimatical calculations based on the averages from our verified analytics participants.
